Sauntering Homeward

A Pilgrimage Toward Wholeness and Compassion

Sauntering Homeward

I’ve always loved paths—those that wind through woods, and those that stir  the soul toward true formation.

What if formation was an invitation to walk a path of liberation—where  you are free to question long-held assumptions, explore doubt and mystery,  imagine and reimagine—sometimes failing, sometimes falling—but always  held by compassion, gentle strength, grace, and support.

To move at the pace of curiosity. To question. To imagine. To doubt, and  wonder. To be met with grace.

That’s the kind of path I want to walk.

Sauntering Homeward invites you into that journey—a gentle trail shaped by  earth, water, air, and fire—where well-being grows with each thoughtful  step…

With a crowd, in the round, on the trail Larry sets a pace and makes the space to listen, see, question, wonder, wander, percolate, and ponder. He implores you to put love where love is not. He inspires you to kick at the darkness until the light bleeds through. He  invites you into disorienting dilemmas and disruptive encounters. Musings from the trail

Walking the dogs, running errands, being a husband, a father, a grandfather, browsing the shelves at the local library, finessing a goal for a street hockey win, sitting on the porch, making a meal, playing games, wrestling with doubts: Larry explores moments of life - memorable and mundane a like - for the tastes of wisdom they contain.

Pilrimage 22

Pilgrimage is a space and pace that nurtures and nourishes and cultivates growth through intentional listening and living. Pilgrimage 22 is a space to more fully explore, experience, and embrace this way of living. Pilgrimage 22 is about experiencing places, people, and digging deep just as Jesus did with his disciples.

Testimonials

Larry Mitchell is a modern bard in the ancient Gaelic sense – blues shouter, story spinner, soul poet. A wanderer who has been lost often enough that he now has a pretty good sense of where he’s headed. Better even than this, he’s a guide and companion to other pilgrims, especially those a little less seasoned.

Larry is a recovering preacher; don’t expect him to tell you how it is or what to do. He’s a tender cynic, a gifted disorienter who will gently pry your fingers from the myths you cling to, spin you around a few times, then help you find the truer, more faithful path.  You’ll find you talk more than he does. He knows the wisdom of both words and silence – yours and his and God’s. Walk with him. Listen.
— Greg Paul
Larry is an incredibly gifted communicator in any situation whose ability to tell the stories of Jesus transports you initially to the first century, but then teleports you forward to see that story with modern-day implications. This gifting is only surpassed then by his character and sincerity in following Jesus that continually inspires me with his authentic honesty. Inviting Larry to come and share with your community will be beyond a blessing to your people!
— David Bell
I would say that Larry Mitchell is one of the world’s great educators, and this would be true enough, except that his craft results in more than an education. To walk (or sit and talk and eat and travel and work and play) with Larry is to experience an apprenticeship in how to live. And not just how to live with hope, purpose, and direction. Sure, all those things too. But gleaning from Larry’s company and craft goes deep to the stuff of being human.

Larry is a spinner of the stories, symbols, and metaphors that hold space for the meaning we weave into our day-to-day lives. As an educator, communicator, companion, and guide he works these storied threads into shared experiences that amplify their impact. Larry shows you how to survive in an often confusing world, and how to channel your survival into contributing to a better world. He’s also a great dad.
— Aram Mitchell
Larry Mitchell walks with everybody—everybody! Privileged people, street people, liberals, conservatives—he wants everybody to pause and see the world for the messed up, creative, hate-filled, God-loved place that it is.
— Father Charles Allen
Larry Mitchell has been a guide for me. He is a master teacher. Whether on the stage, across the table, or along the trail, Larry has learned the art of being himself and equipping others to do the same. He challenges the status quo in provocative, but winsome ways.
— Jeff Reichanadter
Larry is a natural teacher; his classrooms are the most unexpected of places—on the streets of Toronto, in the red light district of Tijuana, in the Paria Canyon, or simply around a dining room table. He crafts teaching moments from everyday life by speaking truth and offering thought-provoking prompts that often end up invoking more questions than answers.

Perhaps most valuable is the safe space he consistently offers as a place to process. Though Larry is a natural guide, he is a fellow sojourner and pilgrim on the journey. His unique approach invites self-inspection, as he takes people out of their comfort zones and into experiences that lead to transformation.
— Serena Acker
Over the years when I’ve found myself in the space of processing my thoughts and circumstances, Larry Mitchell is one of the first people I seek out.  Larry seems to be a craftsman of life.  He’s gifted at journeying into the mysteries of life and faith.  He’s worthy to be trusted with doubts and fears, and he’s unafraid of the bigger questions we all want to ask but are often unwilling to.  Whether guiding small groups through the desert or speaking to large assemblies, you can expect words of hope and reminders of grace to help you on your journey.
— Doug Collins
Larry has a unique ability to gather people around the table of communion—people that wouldn’t normally break bread together. The way Larry leads draws out the best in people. He gives voice to the voiceless and welcomes the marginalized.
